Charles Atkins, MD is a board-certified psychiatrist, clinical trainer, and author of more than seventeen traditionally published books, both fiction and nonfiction. Hundreds of his short stories and articles have appeared in publications ranging from the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) to Writer’s Digest Magazine. His recent textbook on co-occurring substance use and mental disorders, Co-Occurring Disorders: Integrated Assessment and Treatment of Substance Use and Mental Disorders (PESI) is part of the core curriculum of multiple schools of social work and is widely in the training of substance-abuse counselors.
His mysteries and thrillers include the Barret Conyors forensic psychiatry series (Llewellyn and Severn House), Cadaver’s Ball (St. Martin’s Press/Minotaur), and the Lil and Ada Mystery series (Severn House). He writes urban fantasy under his own name, Go To Hell (Argo Navis), and as Caleb James, The Haffling Trilogy and Dark Blood (Dreamspinner Publications).
He provides day-long and multiday workshops on a broad range of topics, from the treatment of opioid-use disorders, co-occurring mental health and substance-use disorders to humor and healing, mindfulness, and the joy of writing.
He lives in Connecticut with his partner and too many cats.
